Class #22 - Sharing Your Hero's Journeys + Jason & the Quest of the Golden Fleece

Good morning, students! Since I'm absent, today's class is self-directed. That means you will guide yourselves along the following steps. Everything you need for class is here on this blog post. Of course, if you need guidance, the substitute teacher is there to assist you.

Learning Target: I can identify the 12 stages and archetypes of the Hero's Journey.

STEP ONE (5 mins)
DO NOW: Without using your notes, write down the 12 stages of the Hero’s Journey in order. Next, write down the archetypes that go along with each stage. How'd you do?

STEP TWO (20 mins)
Share your Hero’s Journey
  • Allow each person at your table to read your hero’s journey.
  • Feedback: Celebrations? Suggestions?
  • If you think your work is 100% done, turn it in to the basket. Make sure to include your name!
  • If you received some helpful suggestions and could improve your work, please take the time to revise it and turn it in by Friday.

STEP THREE (40 mins)
Hero’s Journey or Not?
You will be learning a new Ancient Greek myth today and determining whether or not it is an example of the Hero's Journey.
  • Read this version of Jason & The Quest of the Golden Fleece (below).
  • Next, write a short paragraph that uses supporting evidence to back up one of the following claims (you pick!):
    • "The myth of Jason and the Quest for the Golden Fleece is a strong example of the Hero’s Journey."
    • or
    • "Jason & The Quest for the Golden Fleece is not a strong example of the Hero’s Journey."
  • You may read and discuss the myth in partners, however, each person must write a short response on their own piece of paper. This should be turned in at the end of class (or it becomes homework).
